Located to the south of Rutana Province, approximately 168.9 Km from Bujumbura city and 64 km south of Gitega city, Karera Falls are a spectacular series of waterfalls. The Falls are immersed deep into the forest with very gigantic trees and that are stunning to watch as they flow via different paths in six branches and three different levels.
On a first level, is a main tall fall subdivided into two parallel branches of a length estimated at 80 m about which pours onto a basin. This fall splits into several waterfalls of different sizes intersected with two platforms. Another smaller waterfall is located roughly 50 m to the west of this main fall. Waters of the two falls converge on a second landing to form the third waterfall which pours in the valley.
The falls occupy over 142 hectares and belong to the dense forest vegetation which makes the area look very beautiful and attractive to all kinds of travellers both local and international. These are fully protected since 1980 after being declared a destination to be protected by the government.
Karera waterfalls are one of the must-see tour sites in Burundi. It is definitely worthwhile during the whole year round. During the rainy season, the four falls obviously have more water and you’ll be able to swim and stay all the time you would like.
From The Karera Waterfalls, you’ll be able to visit the same day the foremost southern source of the White Nile in Rutovu and the Nyakazu Fault known as Germany Faults.
