Kibira National Parc

Kayanza, Burundi

Kibira National Park is a situated in the North West of Burundi with a surface area covering 400 km. It lies atop the mountains of the Congo-Nile Divide, extends north from the provincial town of Muramvya to the border of Rwanda where it is continuous with the Nyungwe National Park.

It is estimated that 16% of the park consists of primary montane rainforest (the only montane forest in entire country) and is adjacent to two large tea plantations, one in Teza and the other in Rwegura.

It is one of Burundi’s protected areas where different varieties of wildlife make their home. The forest, the rivers and streams that freely flow through it, support animals’ life such as baboons, chimps and more than 200 kinds of bird species and still is highly considered ‘the most important site in Burundi for the conservation of montane-forest birds.
