Muyaga Parish

Cankuzo, Burundi

Located a few kilometers from the capital of the province of Cankuzo, the Muyaga parish was the first built by white missionaries in Burundi. Founded on May 23, 1889, it is also called the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2023.

After failing to enter through the provinces of Rumonge and Bujumbura, the white missionaries entered from the East in Cendajuru commune, precisely in a locality called Misugi where they erected the first cross, called the Misugi cross. It was a sign of the beginning of evangelization in Burundi.

After spending some time, the white missionaries realized that in the locality of Misugi, the population was not dense. They then decided to move to the Muyaga parish where they had celebrated the first Easter. As soon as they settled, they built the building of the said parish. They also built the first primary school of Muyaga dating from 1907, a health center but also the initiation of the branches.

The parish is also called the sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as people of different religions go there to spend a good time in absolute silence.
