Teza, Burundi’s Oldest Tea Estate

Kayanza, Burundi

Teza tea plantations, 600 hectares located at the edge of the Kibira forest in the Burundian highlands, are one of the country's oldest and most emblematic tea plantations. Founded in 1967, these plantations were established as part of the expansion of tea cultivation initiated by Belgian settlers in 1931. Today, they play a crucial role in the local and national economy, while providing a spectacular landscape for visitors and locals alike.

Now, Burundi is well-known as a producer of flavoured tea in the world and tea growing excel better in Teza, among the valleys of mountains and the thermal springs. The tea plantations here exhibit some of the most beautiful scenic view Burundi has to offer.

Teza, a hidden gem located on the edge of Kibira forest, situated at an altitude of between 1,800 and 2,300 metres, has been growing tea since it was introduced in 1931.

The greenery of the estate is relaxing and tranquil, and the breeze bears countryside freshness. The plantations are zoned to allow the workers to collect the tea leaves after harvest. A scenic view from a distance gives an impression of a green carpet spread over rolling hills.

It is quite an experience the speed with which workers pluck the tea leaves in the fields using both hands into the harvest baskets. They are welcoming, will lend their big hats and harvesting basket as you get a first-hand experience of traditional harvest.

A half day tour is enough to experience tea growing from nursery into the fields, sampling of different grades of tea, enjoy cool weather, interact with locals, learn cultures and take pictures for good memories.
