Package Itinerary

Our 6-day Burundi Tour gives you full access to see all of the unique tourist attractions in the nation. The tour will cover a range of activities from Bujumbura capital city to Rumonge via Gitega, the nation’s second-largest city.

Day 1: Visit Bujumbura City and Rusizi National Park Tour

Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi is home to some of the country’s iconic landmarks commonly known as Buja. It’s a business city with traditional markets and has retained unique characteristics from its former colony, the French.

Bujumbura offers a magnificent view of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s longest freshwater lake and the second-largest of the African Great Lakes for relaxation and recreation.

In Bujumbura, you will experience local markets and talented artisan shops, where you can purchase unique souvenirs to bring home with you.

After exploring the city, your next destination will be Rusizi National Park, a fascinating and breathtaking destination for wildlife enthusiasts. It is accessible from Bujumbura (a 20-minute drive from Bujumbura). The plains surrounding the river flood periodically, leading to the hibernation of hundreds of animals in the area to replenish. Visitors can see a variety of wildlife ranging from the hippos, crocodiles, and primates.

Hippos are ever present and consider this as their niche, a perfect place to encounter them. The park, with its clear skies, and indigenous trees is a true bird-watchers paradise. The migratory birds to be sighted at the park are rare and beautiful species from Asia and Europe.

Day 2: Visit Teza and Gishora Sanctuary of Drums

Your second day will start from Teza, a hidden gem located on the edge of Kibira forest, sits at an altitude of 4500-7000ft above sea level, and which has been growing tea since it was introduced into the hilly country during Belgian occupation in 1931.

The greenery of the estate is relaxing and tranquil, and the breeze bears countryside freshness. A scenic view from a distance gives the impression of a green carpet spread over rolling hills.

To close your day in style, you will visit the Gishora Sanctuary of Drums to experience Burundi culture as well as the architecture of a traditional royal palace. Burundi drums are on the UNESCO WHS list and they are known to be the best drums ever.

Day 3: Ruvubu Park

Ideal for camping, the park is the last vestige of the natural grassland ecosystem which once covered the vast majority of the Northeast part of Burundi. It is home to several wildlife species, most notably Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, waterbuck, numerous duiker species, and five primate species, including olive baboon, vervet monkey, red colobus monkey, blue monkey, and Senegal bushbaby. Approximately 200 species of birds are recorded in the park.

Day 4: Karera Falls and Source of Nile

Your destination on the fourth day will take you to Karera Falls, a spectacular series of waterfalls in Southeastern Burundi that offer an impressive and refreshing spectacle.

After Karera Falls, Nyakazu Fault will be visited, a site for German military fortification from World War I where you find a perennial waterfall with a height of over 100 m.

On your way to the next destination, a short visit will be paid to the southernmost source of the Nile River.

Day 5: Rumonge Visit

Known for its most beautiful beachfront hotels, it’s best fitting destination to enclose your tour in style and in a most relaxing way.

While in Rumonge, you will enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking, and boating on Lake Tanganyika, as well as exploring the town’s rich cultural heritage and sampling the local cuisine

Day 6: Return to Bujumbura city

On your way back to Bujumbura city, another highlight of this tour includes exploring the memorial commemorating the meeting of Livingstone and Stanley where explorer and missionary Dr David Livingstone and journalist and explorer Henry Morton Stanley visited and spent two nights in November 1871.
