Our Wildlife tour will take you to Rusizi National Park and Kibira National Park, the most visited conservation areas in Burundi which host large numbers of animal species including hippos’ crocodiles, primates, baboons, chimps, and many bird species
Day 1: Kibira National Park
Your trip will start from Kibira National Park situated in the northwest of Burundi (mainly in Kayanza province) with a surface area covering 400 km. It lies atop the mountains of the Congo-Nile Divide and extends north from the provincial town of Muramvya to the border of Rwanda where it is continuous with the Nyungwe National Park.
It is estimated that 16% of the park consists of primary montane rainforest (the only montane forest in the entire country) and is adjacent to two large tea plantations, one in Teza and the other in Rwegura.
It is one of Burundi’s protected areas where different varieties of wildlife make their home. The forest, the rivers, and streams that freely flow through it support animals’ life such as baboons, chimps, and more than 200 kinds of bird species and still highly considered ‘the most important site in Burundi for the conservation of montane-forest birds.
During your visit to the park, you will explore the scenic beauty offered by Teza tea plantations, a hidden gem located on the edge of Kibira forest which has been growing tea since it was introduced into the hilly country during the Belgian occupation in 1931.
Burundi is well-known as a producer of flavored tea in Africa, tea growing excels better in Teza, among the valleys of mountains and the thermal springs. The tea plantations here exhibit some of the most beautiful scenic views Burundi has to offer where the greenery of the estate is relaxing and tranquil, and the breeze bears countryside freshness.
It is quite an experience the speed with which workers pluck the tea leaves in the fields using both hands into the harvest baskets. They are welcoming and will lend their big hats and harvesting baskets as you get a first-hand experience of traditional harvest.
Day 2
On your second day, Rusizi National Park will be a fascinating and breathtaking destination to explore wildlife around the Rusizi River. The park is accessible from Bujumbura City (a 20-minute drive from Bujumbura). The plains surrounding the river flood periodically, leading to the hibernation of hundreds of animals in the area to replenish. You will be able to see a variety of wildlife ranging from the hippos, crocodiles, and primates.
Hippos are ever present and consider this as their niche, a perfect place to encounter them. The park, with its clear skies, and indigenous trees is a true bird-watchers paradise. The migratory birds to be sighted at the park are rare and beautiful species from Asia and Europe such as sandpipers and plovers can be noticed at the park.
On your way from one park to another, you will experience the majestic mountains, lush valleys, fertile plains, the Great Rift Valley, scenic hills, and unique plateaus of Burundi. And, a short tour of Bujumbura city will wipe up your tour in a fascinating way.
