Lake Tanganyika is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes stretching across multiple countries, including Burundi. The crystal-clear waters of the lake reflect the surrounding hills and mountains, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere that captivates the senses.

Day 1: Rusizi National Park

Rusizi National Park is a national park in Burundi, located next to the Rusizi River and Lake Tanganyika at 15 km north of the city of Bujumbura. It is a fascinating and breathtaking destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The plains surrounding the Rusizi river and Lake Tanganyika flood periodically, leading to the hibernation of hundreds of animals in the area to replenish. Visitors can see a variety of wildlife ranging from the hippos, crocodiles, and primates.

Hippos are ever present and consider this as their niche, a perfect place to encounter them. The park, with its clear skies, and indigenous trees is a true bird-watchers paradise. The migratory birds to be sighted at the park are rare and beautiful species from Asia and Europe such as sandpipers and plovers. The best way to experience the beauty of the park is to drive in it using a boat and pass through Lake Tanganyika.

Day 2: Rumonge Province

Via a boat, your next destination will be Rumonge province located in the Southwestern part of Burundi. It is situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, which is known for its crystal-clear waters and scenic views.

The province is home to a variety of cultural and historical attractions, including traditional markets, historic ruins, and natural landmarks like the Kigwena Nature Reserve. Visitors to Rumonge can enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking, and boating on Lake Tanganyika, as well as exploring the town’s rich cultural heritage and sampling the local cuisine.

Most beautiful beachfront hotels in Burundi such as Sunstone Beach and BlueBay Beach are found in Rumonge at the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
