Covering 508 km2, Ruvubu National Park borders Karuzi, Muyinga, Cankuzo, and Ruyigi Provinces while extending to the neighboring Tanzania to the south, in the Valley of Ruvubu River whose landscape is dominant in the area.

Ideal for camping and easily accessible by road, the park is the last vestige of the natural grassland ecosystem which once covered the vast majority of the Northeast part of Burundi.

It is home to several wildlife species, most notably Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, waterbuck, numerous duiker species, and five primate species, including olive baboon, vervet monkey, red colobus monkey, blue monkey, and Senegal bushbaby. Approximately 200 species of birds are recorded in the park.
